Hayfever

What is Hay Fever?

Hayfever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is characterized by cold-like symptoms such as an itchy and runny nose, congestion, and sneezing.

It is a common myth that viral infection causes hay fever, but hay fever is the consequence of autoimmune response of the body against the pollen, which results in these cold-like symptoms.

Symptoms of Hay Fever

Following are the common symptoms

  • Itchy or runny nose
  • Continuous sneezing
  • Lethargy
  • Headache
  • Loss of sensations
  • Irritation and itching around the ear, nose, and throat
  • Congestion and nasal obstruction

Visit your doctor if these symptoms get worsen.

Causes of Hay Fever

The leading cause of hay fever is pollen. Pollen isn’t a harmful substance, but in the case of hay fever, your body recognizes the pollen as a harmful substance and starts its defence mechanism.

The defence mechanism includes releasing histamines which then results in the symptoms of hay fever-like itchy nose and sneezing. The hay fever can be prevented by less exposure to the pollen.

Pollen Season in the UK

There are three types of the pollen, and among them, the grass pollen is the leading cause of Hay fever.

  • Tree pollen occurs between the last days of the march to the mid of May, and approximately 25% of people who are allergic to the pollen get affected by tree pollen.
  • Tree pollen is followed by the grass pollen, which is the most common cause of hay fever and grass pollen remains in the air from mid-may to July.
  • Weed pollen doesn’t follow any season but is released till late September.

Treatment of Hay Fever

If you are suffering from the Hay fever, then the following are some treatments to get the instant relief from the symptoms:

Steroid Nasal Sprays

These steroid nasal sprays help provide long-term relief from hay fever symptoms such as an itchy and sneezing nose. The nasal sprays take approximately 12 hours to kick in!

Anti Histamines

Histamine is a chemical responsible for responding to allergies such as congestion and nasal obstruction, so the best way to get instant relief is to use antihistamines which come in various forms such as nasal drops or pills.

Injection

If you are not getting relief from the treatments mentioned above, then the best way to get instant and long-term relief is by getting hay fever injections. Hay fever injections are effective in providing relief for the entire season, but since they are potent steroids. Discuss your condition with your doctor before going for these injections.
